In the 1800s, matches were new, temperamental, and known to light up in your pocket. They were called vestas, after the Roman goddess of the hearth, so the little hinged box that kept them safe became the vesta case, usually worn on a watch chain. We kept the hinge and the chain. Ours is deeply ribbed, with a red jasper panel where the striker used to be, and it holds things that are less flammable now: a tiny love note, a folded mantra, the manifestation you're not telling anyone about yet.
